MLM Prospecting and Recruiting – How to Convince Even the Most Negative and Pessimistic Prospects
By Nick Lang
We have all met individuals that have an extremely negative opinion about anything relating to MLM. It seems that they have something against the industry. The reason for this negativity is not the important issue here. What’s important is what we can do to help remedy the situation and get them to agree to look at your business model with an open mind.
Anyone that truly does proper due diligence and studies MLM will know that it is a legitimate industry. The problem lies in that many people will never sincerely investigate MLM with an open mind.
Our job as prospectors and recruiters is to break down these barriers as we invite others to take a serious look at the MLM industry, and then more specifically, whatever product or service it is that we are offering.
These “Pessimists” will usually sniff out various approaches to check out a MLM company, product, or service like a bloodhound. You cannot beat around the bush with these people using a backdoor or sideways (aka I’m too chicken) approach. You need to be direct and straight to the point.
These are the type of people that will adamantly turn down and reject an invitation to attend a live opportunity meeting, lunch appointment with an upline team member, or other similar activities.
They want the “steak” without the hyped up “sizzle.” What I’m suggesting here is that you cut out all of the garbage and give them what they want. Do not try to finesse them into buying with your silver-tongued eloquent sales presentation.
Use the “Puppy Dog” approach. Pet stores popularized this approach by telling skeptical buyers to take a puppy home over night and see if they would really like it or not. Well, sure enough, by the next day the prospects had fallen in love with the cute ball of fur and decided that they wanted to keep it.
Skeptical and negative prospects already know what MLM is and they don’t like it and have absolutely no interest in entertaining another word that comes out of your mouth.
This is why many MLM’ers prefer the easier way of prospecting and recruiting through Rejection Free Marketing so they don’t have deal with the skeptics because they only communicate with interested prospects that come looking for them. But whether you use Rejection Free Marketing or not, you might as well utilize the traditional form of building your MLM business.
The great thing about the skeptics is that if you can somehow turn them, they can end up being your most excited and passionate team members as well as your biggest producers. Like I said before, when dealing with skeptics, be as direct as possible.
Tell them something like, “Just try the product or service and let me know either way. You will either like it or not. But don’t shut me down without even trying it. I’m just asking you to try it. If you don’t like it or even hate it, I would appreciate knowing that since feedback is always helpful even if it’s on the negative side.”
They might say something along the lines of, “Look, you are wasting my time as well as your time and money here. Don’t bother. Thank you for thinking of me, but I’m just not interested.”
You might come back with, “I appreciate you being straight and up front with me. I’m not asking you to join my business right now. I’m just asking you to try out this free sample (or take a free trial of this service) and let me know what you think. That’s all I’m asking and I know it’s not too much to ask of you. Could you at least humor me if nothing else and try it out? I would really appreciate it. Is that fair?”
Here’s what will happen at this point. They might still refuse to try it, or they might let you know that they have already tried it somewhere else one, two, or even three and it didn’t give them the results they were looking for. If this happens, politely excuse yourself from the conversation and move on to the next prospect.
Another thing that could happen is that they might agree to try out the product or service and not get results or not really like it. If that happens, thank them for their time and move on. If this happens often, you might want to reconsider what you are representing. Are you offering a unique product or service that the general public has a need or want for that fits their price range? Does this product or service deliver on what it promises? If the answer is no, you might want to continue investigating until you find a company that can give you these things.
If the skeptical prospect does in fact try out the product or service and find that they really like it, they might decide to buy from you. They might also like the product or service enough that they will finally look at the MLM business with an open mind and see the true potential of this great industry.
Don’t let the skeptics get you down. If you are confident in the product or service you offer, use that to break down the negative barriers. You never know when that negative person that has always put you down decides to join your business as your top recruit and generate $10,000 per month in commissions payable to you. No promises, but hey, you never know!
Good luck prospecting!
